Living the Fantasy
In Fall 2022, I took my English Senior Capstone class, Senior Seminar, which ended in a final 40-minute presentation and cultural studies paper. Within my project, Living the Fantasy: The Commodification of Drag through Popular Media, I explored how over the past 40 years, popular media has made drag accessible to a mainstream audience. However, the increased visibility has also meant that drag has been subjected to a regulating heteronormative gaze that packages and commodifies the culture. Later in April 2023, an edited version of my essay was published in Issue 7 of Queerlings, a biannual online magazine based in the UK dedicated to uplifting the LGBTQIA+ community.
In Spring 2023, I was selected as an EMERGE Scholar for the 2022-23 academic year. The award recognizes undergraduate students who have completed original innovative research, scholarship, and/or creative works during their career at Florida Southern College. The awards are bestowed on students whose work significantly contributes to the body of knowledge within their discipline.
Dr. Jenny Moffitt nominated me for my outstanding work across the disciplines of English and Theatre Arts. Dr. Moffitt highlighted my many contributions including authoring multiple academic papers, and authoring and directing multiple plays.
